Esta síntesis de la monumental Historia general de las drogas analiza la evolución de las actitudes ante las drogas a lo largo de la historia; su utilización con fines religiosos, terapéuticos o meramente hedonistas; la reacción del Estado y los problemas que conlleva la prohibición, la anatemización y la persecución policial... La obra aporta un enorme caudal de información y plantea un acercamiento al universo de las drogas que huye de tópicos, banalizaciones y visiones simplistas. Afirma Escohotado en el prólogo que «aunque hasta hace poco fuese un campo reservado al sensacionalismo periodístico, o a abstrusos manuales de toxicología, la particular historia de las drogas ilumina la historia general de la humanidad con una luz propia, como cuando abrimos una ventana hasta entonces cerrada al horizonte y las mismas cosas aparecen bajo una perspectiva nueva». El autor va repasando el uso de la farmacopea en distintas épocas hasta llegar al experimento actual de la Prohibición, cuyos resultados saltan a la vista. Altamente recomendable.
